Who We Are
Last updated: 19 July 2026
FONA Technologies Ltd ("FONA", "we", "us", "our") is a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17337746), registered office at Hethersett, Norwich, England. We provide the FONA mobile app, which lets users make low-cost international calls to mobiles and landlines in 176+ countries and free app-to-app encrypted messaging. This policy explains how we handle personal data in connection with our website and app.
FONA Technologies Ltd is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have any questions or want to exercise your rights, contact us at admin@fonatechnologies.co.uk.
Information We Collect, How We Use It, and Who We Share It With
We collect the minimum information needed to run the service. This includes your mobile phone number, which we verify by sending a one-time SMS code when you create or access your account. To provide calling, airtime sending, end-to-end encrypted messaging, and to calculate usage and billing (such as call duration and cost), some call and usage data is necessarily processed through our infrastructure partner, Twilio. We do not otherwise collect personal information about you.
Payments are handled entirely by Stripe. We do not collect or store your card details - Stripe processes and settles payments directly (settlement to us is in GBP from Stripe's UK entity).
Our website and app may also automatically generate limited technical data (such as device type, app version, and IP address) as a normal part of operating any online service, for security and fault-finding purposes.
We use this information to verify your identity and secure your account; connect and bill your calls, video calls and messages; process payments through Stripe; provide customer support; and meet our legal and regulatory obligations. Our legal bases under UK GDPR are performance of our contract with you, our legitimate interests in running and securing the service, and compliance with legal obligations.
We share data only with the service providers who help us run FONA: Twilio (call, video and messaging infrastructure) and Stripe (payment processing), each acting under their own data protection terms. These providers may process data outside the UK; where that happens, appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) are used. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for advertising purposes.
Our website uses only essential cookies needed for the site to function. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Data Retention, Your Rights, and Other Information
We keep personal data only for as long as necessary to provide the service, comply with our legal and tax obligations, and resolve disputes, after which it is deleted or anonymised.
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the personal data we hold about you, to object to certain processing, and to request a copy of your data in a portable format. To exercise any of these rights, contact admin@fonatechnologies.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) if you believe your data has been mishandled.
FONA is not directed at or intended for use by anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll post any changes on this page with a new "last updated" date.
